Energy-Efficient Power Assist Control Methods for Periodic Motions

Abstract: This paper considers power assist control methods for periodic motions. In most power assist applications, additional force is applied in proportion to the instantaneous value of force generated by human. However, human persistent tasks are sometimes periodic and it can be shown that the proportional assist is not optimal for such motions in the sense of energy efficiency. Therefore, we propose power assisting methods to suppress the velocity fluctuation similar to the repetitive control. We compare the effect… Show more

“…Various power-assist methods are available in the literature such as constant-assisted power (CAP), proportion-assisted power (PAP) and few advanced power-assist methods. 5,6 The mathematical model of the bicycle is presented in Astrom et al, 7 while comprehensive theoretical analysis and characterization of electric bicycles are reported in Muetze and Tan. 8 A fusion-based controller to assist the cyclist for stable riding is presented in Iuchi and Murakami.…”

“…The RC was first applied in many motion control problems such as Hard Disk drives [19], Compact Disk players [20] and also in non rotatory motion control applications [21,22]. Afterwards, the aforementioned technique has been employed also in power assist applications to generate the auxiliary torque [23]. Moreover, the RC has been also successfully applied in the field of EABs.…”
