Energy–Economy–Environment Interactions: A Comparative Analysis of Lisbon and Sao Paulo Metropolitan Areas

Abstract: Metropolitan areas constitute a critical arena in which to protect the environment and handle climate change efforts, both because they are at the root of the problem and they form a suitable working ground to deal with their systemic nature. Using a multi-regional input-output modelling framework, with energy-environmental extensions, this paper proposes a comparative analysis of the Sao Paulo and Lisbon metropolitan areas, distinguishing territorial, production-based and consumption-based responsibilities. “…The relevance in studying the geography of financial business services is pointed out by the growing interest in the financial growth nexus [25][26][27][28][29][30][31]. Although there is still debate about the exact causal direction of the link between finance and growth, a considerable amount of empirical evidence suggests that access to finance positively affects the performance of companies, increasing opportunities for economic growth [5,28,38].…”

“…The AVC acts as an intermediary between agricultural producers and the growing economy, including financial service linkages generally located in large urban centers [23,24]. The mainstream literature on financial development has recently focused on highlighting the so-called finance-growth-nexus, pointing out the causality involving the qualification of the financial supply and the growth of the sectorial output [25][26][27][28][29][30][31]. However, empirically, little is studied about the spatial patterns of linkages between financial services and agriculture, capable of increasing the value-added embedded in trade.…”

“…Various studies in the urban sustainability field have chosen to analyse environmental sustainability in urban areas. Several examples focus on Lisbon [13][14][15][16]; nonetheless, the literature has a clear gap regarding establishing a causal relationship between EU funds and positive or negative environmental sustainability trends in the LMA. This article contributes to filling this gap and also can be used for other regions suffering from the same conditions.…”
