Energy Dissipating Devices in Falling Rock Protection Barriers

Abstract: Rockfall is a phenomenon which, when uncontrolled, may cause extensive material damage and personal injury. One of the structures used to avoid accidents caused by debris flows or rockfalls is flexible barriers. The energy dissipating devices which absorb the energy generated by rock impact and reduce the mechanical stresses in the rest of the elements of the structure are an essential part of these kinds of structures. This document proposes an overview of the performance of energy dissipating devices, as wel… Show more

“…The energy dissipating devices attached to steel ropes can consume 60-80% of total impact energy on the system [6,7]. The research [25] shows that no matter frictional, yielding and hybrid energy dissipating devices, the restoring force characteristics of them are similar, as shown in Figure 8b. The effect of energy dissipating device on the impact deformation of the system is directly related to the mechanical behavior of the connected rope.…”

“…The interception structure is made by the principal net that has to bear the dynamic impact of the falling rock block through its plastic deformation and transferring the load to the foundations. A large variety of technologies for the principal net, posts, fixing, and connecting components can be found in practice, and different energy dissipating devices have been developed [105].…”

“…Díaz et al [4] investigated the energy-consuming characteristics of spring-type energy dissipator. Castanon-Jano et al [5] summarized the composition and energy dissipating principle of the different energy dissipators used in the rockfall interception system and evaluated the energy dissipating capacity. Muhunthan et al [6] researched the bolt forms of flexible rockfall protection barriers.…”
