Energy-Delay Evaluation and Optimization for NB-IoT PSM With Periodic Uplink Reporting

Abstract: The narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a new wireless protocol proposed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project intending for low data rate IoT applications. The general objectives of the NB-IoT include supporting massive connections, enhanced coverage, reduced cost and complexity, ultra-low power consumption, and flexible delay characteristics. To lower energy consumption while providing reliable connections, extended discontinuous reception and power saving mode (PSM) mechanism are applied in the NB… Show more

“…They took into account the massive connections of IoT devices by grouping MTCDs and configuring their sleep durations equally in one group, and they increased the energy efficiency of the MTCDs. In [42], [43], the authors analyzed the energy consumption and delay evaluation for NB-IoT devices using both power-saving mode (PSM) and extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) mechanisms. In [6], the authors proposed a modified DRX mechanism incorporating a quick sleeping indication (QSI) for MTCDs.…”

“…Average delay and power consumption of cellular IoT under periodic uplink traffic are analyzed using a semi-Markov model. 27 Moreover, the optimal value of the PSM timer derived using the proposed optimization model minimizes the energy consumption of the device while maintaining the delay requirements. Azari et al 28 propose a queuing theory-based approach to analyze the impact of data scheduling model on average delay and energy consumption of NB-IoT device.…”

“…In [81], the authors developed a semi-Markov chain with power saving mode, idle mode, random access, and transmission mode to study the energy requirement and delay performance for NB-IoT. It is noted that for massive synchronous connections, extra power is drained in random access and transmission states due to collisions.…”
