Energy Consumption Versus Greenhouse Gas Emissions in EU

Abstract: Purpose:The article aims to trace out the interplay of the share of individual energy sources in the total consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from the European Union countries. Approach/Methodology/Design: By taking into account the share of individual energy sources in consumption in 2015, the EU countries were divided into 5 clusters. For each cluster, the values of the indicators for 2005 were determined to assess the changes. Additionally, energy dependence and greenhouse gas emissions factors were i… Show more

“…The developed nation has less direct impact because they have sizeable renewable resources in the energy mix. The direct impact of energy consumption is also validated by earlier studies such as Mardiana (2015), Hashimoto (2019), Ossowska et al (2020), Flammini et al (2022), Das and Sharma (2023) and Keerthana et al (2023).…”

“…The literature on the subject shows that in recent years, one might spot positive changes concerning the consumption of energy from renewable sources in the European Union, but these changes vary depending on a country [92,93]. The type of renewable energy used depends on the geographical location and the economic and financial efficiency of each source and our research shows that the leaders in the use of RES have changed over the past decade.…”

“…Cyprus and Malta have the largest share of oil in energy use; in these countries almost all consumption comes from this source. Furthermore, based on energy dependence, the highest shares of imports in the total energy consumption are observed in the two islands (Ossowska et al, 2020).…”
