PurposeThis paper aims to point out the scientific development and research density of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic, wind, and biomass, using a mix of computational tools. Based on this, it was possible to verify the existence of new research trends and opportunities in a macro view regarding management, performance evaluation, and decision-making in renewable energy generation systems and installations.Design/methodology/approachA scientometric approach was used based on a research protocol to retrieve papers from the Scopus database, and through four scientometric questions, to analyze each area. Software such as the Science Mapping Analysis Software Tool (SciMAT) and Sci2 Tool were used to map the science development and density.FindingsThe scientific development of renewable energy areas is highlighted, pointing out research opportunities regarding management, studies on costs and investments, systemic diagnosis, and performance evaluation for decision-making in businesses in these areas.Research limitationsThis paper was limited to the articles indexed in the Scopus database and by the questions used to analyze the scientific development of renewable energy areas.Practical implicationsThe results show the need for a managerial perspective in businesses related to renewable energy sources at the managerial, technical, and operational levels, including performance evaluation, assertive decision making, and adequate use of technical and financial resources.Originality/valueThis paper shows that there is a research field to be explored, with gaps to fill and further research to be carried out in this area. Besides, this paper can serve as a basis for other studies and research in other areas and domains.

A solar polymer heat exchanger is designed to heat water; its primary materials are plastic water bottles with a capacity of 1.5 liters. These materials were recycled to preserve the environment and to make use of it again. The thermal insulation properties are adopted for the characterization of polymeric materials. These properties concern the conservation of energy for the longest period of time and the absence of problems caused by rust and corrosion, which are usually encountered in traditional heat exchangers. The heat exchanger experiments start by tracking the flow of water inside the pipes by a valve. The water temperature and flow rates are determined at the inlet and outlet surfaces of the exchanger. The obtained results indicated an increase in water temperature exceeding 10℃ in an ideal spring day. The thermal efficiency of the solar collector was about 62% under the sunlight, and 44% in the laboratory where halogen lamps were used as an industrial light source.

This work concerns numerical studies of PVT air collector operating in dynamic mode. We presented the temperature of the solar cells and of the air at the outlet of the PVT collector with and without reflectors. The obtained simulation results has been validated by comparating with the experimental results available in literature, where good agreement was been noted. In addition, we determine the optimal position of the reflectors by numerical calculation, in order to obtain the maximal concentration of the solar radiation intensity on PV/T collector. The thermal and electrical efficiency of PV/T collector without reflectors and with reflectors in optimal position have been calculated for composite climate at Tetouan (-5°N, 35.5°E). So, the effect of adding solar reflectors on the electrical and thermal performance is showing.
