The study systematically explored the effect of alkali concentration and soaking time on the microstructure and tensile properties of single-cellulosic Buluh Semantan. Scanning electron microscopy and tensile tests were conducted to determine the effects of different alkali treatments on the properties of the single-cellulosic bamboo fibers. In particular, the effects of NaOH concentration and soaking time on the tensile properties of the single-cellulosic bamboo fiber were investigated. The single-cellulosic bamboo fiber was immersed in 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt.% aqueous NaOH solutions for soaking times of 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h. The tensile properties of the fiber increased after each alkali treatment. The alkali concentration and soaking time significantly affected the fiber properties. The ultimate tensile strength of the single-cellulosic Buluh Semantan treated with 2 wt.% NaOH for 12 h decreased to 214 MPa relative to the fibers that experienced water retting. The highest tensile strength herein was 356.8 MPa for the single-cellulosic fiber that was soaked for 12 h in 4 wt.% NaOH. Comparatively, the tensile strength of the single-cellulosic bamboo fiber that was soaked for 12 h in 8 wt.% NaOH was 234.8 MPa. The tensile modulus of the single-cellulosic fiber was 12.06 GPa after soaking in 8 wt.% NaOH for 18 h, indicating that a strong alkali treatment negatively affected the stiffness and suitability for use of the fibers in applications. The topography of the fiber surface became much rougher after the alkali treatments due to the removal of hemicellulose and other surface impurities. The alkali treatments substantially changed the morphology of the fiber surface, suggesting an increase in wettability.

This article provides an experimental investigation into the crashworthiness of carbon–jute–glass reinforced epoxy circular composite tubes. The test specimens were fabricated of 6 layers with different stacking sequence using wet‐wrapping process and tested under uniaxial quasi‐static compression loading up to complete crushing. The effects of hybrid reinforcement, stacking sequence, and relative reinforcement amounts on the energy absorption capabilities and failure modes were studied. Also, the crush load–displacement response, initial crushing failure load, total energy absorption, specific energy absorption, average crushing load, and crushing force efficiency were determined and discussed. The scanning electron microscope study was considered to analyze the failure modes of the crushed specimens. Results indicate that specimens' failure modes and energy absorption capabilities were highly dominated by the reinforcement combinations and plies stacking sequence. Also, hybrid carbon–jute–glass reinforced epoxy composite tubes have the potential to be used as energy absorbers as compared to jute‐reinforced epoxy composite tubes. The JGC composite tube has a higher load carrying capacity and energy absorption capability compared to other hybrid composite tubes, so it seems to be the best appropriate choice for energy absorbing devices. Betung bamboo has a bigger stem diameter, thicker walls, and shorter internodes than other species of bamboo, making it ideal for building materials such as bridges and interior furnishings that may also be turned into works of art. Alkaline NaOH treatment was introduced to Betung bamboo to increase its mechanical properties. The alkaline treatment used a solution consisting of 5 %NaOH. Specimens with alkaline treatment were immersed into 5%NaOH solution for one hour, two hours, and three hours, followed by two hours of drying in a furnace at 60 °C. Tensile tests (ASTM D638) and flexural tests (ASTM D790) were carried out using servo hydraulics MTS Landmark 100 kN under static loading. The tensile strength, modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) were analyzed from the results tests. The average maximum tensile strength of the Betung bamboo internode immersed for two hours into 5%NaOH solution is about 195.95 MPa, whereas the average values of MOR and MOE are about 207.35 MPa and 4.56 GPa, respectively. The faults and surface conditions in the Betung bamboo internode were observed using fractographic and morphological observations.
