Show more

“…A certain confounding with different fibre or other dietary properties could not be completely ruled out in the other studies quoted above, though. The relatively low effects on methane of the high amounts of sucrose fed (upto 370 g/kg dietary DM), as reported by Kirchgessner et al (1994) and by Mü ller et al (1994), might have been the result of a lack of a clear effect on fibre digestibility.…”

“…Independent of target pH, degradabilities were higher (p < 0.05) with the sucrose diet. Kirchgessner et al (1994) and Vallimont et al (2004) noted an increase of NDF digestibility when replacing starch with sucrose at certain levels, while Heldt et al (1999) in one experiment observed a reduced NDF digestibility. From the present results, it is obvious that there was a difference between sucrose and the easily accessible form of starch in their effects on fibre degradation, especially at the high pH, even though ruminal pH had declined more distinctly short after feeding with sucrose than with starch.…”
