Summary:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of inulin [as topinambur (Helianthus tuberosus L.) powder] on in vitro rumen fermentation of diets containing hay and pelleted concentrate for sheep (approximately 60:40%) in artificial rumen (the RUSITEC system). The RUSITEC system consisted of six fermentation vessels. Topinambur powder was added at levels of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 g/day into the five fermentation vessels while the last one served as a control (without having any topinambur powder). The results showed that the addition of topinambur powder up to 1.0 g/day reduced NH 3 -N concentration significantly (p<0.05). However, the other basal parameters of rumen fermentation (pH, short-chain fatty acid production and organic matter digestibility) examined in this study were not significantly affected by the addition of topinambur powder. These results indicated that inulin has the potential to improve ruminal nitrogen utilization.Key words: Helianthus tuberosus L., inulin, prebiotic, rumen, topinambur powder. RESUMO -Objetivou-se com este experimento avaliar o desempenho produtivo, a digestibilidade da matéria seca e dos nutrientes e a composição do leite de cabras Saanen alimentadas com rações contendo casca do grão de soja (CGS) em substituição ao milho (0, 50 ou 100%CGS) no período da lactação até o pré-parto (30 dias). Foram utilizadas 18 cabras (75,70 ± 10,59 kg) em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As dietas apresentaram em média 14,82% PB e 2,28 Mcal de EM/kg MS ingerida.Os animais foram mantidos confinados em baias individuais com controle diário da ração ingerida e da produção de leite. No 150 o dia de lactação, e também no 20 o dia anterior à data prevista para o parto, iniciou-se a coleta de fezes para determinação da digestibilidade da ração e dos nutrientes. Mensalmente, foram coletadas amostras de leite para análise dos principais constituintes. Os níveis de CGS não influenciaram o peso corporal (PC), as ingestões de matéria seca (IMS) e matéria orgânica (IMO), a digestibilidade de matéria seca (DMS), matéria orgânica (DMO) e proteína bruta (DPB) para produção de leite, a eficiência de produção de leite e a composição do leite no período de lactação. Também não afetaram o PC e as digestibilidades de MS e MO no período pré-parto. Os níveis de CGC influenciaram as ingestões de proteína bruta e fibra em detergente neutro e a digestibilidade da fibra em detergente neutro nos dois períodos avaliados. No período pré-parto, os maiores resultados para ingestão de MS e MO, digestibilidade da PB e nitrogênio uréico no plasma foram obtidos no nível de 100%CGS. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of agricultural biomass for energy purpose in many northern countries. This has created demand for novel, high biomass yielding, specific quality crops for sustainable use. The aim of the current study was to examine Artemisia dubia Wall. for biomass yield and biomass characteristics important for combustion in the temperate climate conditions. The crops were grown on an EndocalcariEpihypogleyic Cambisol (CMg-p-w-can) without fertilization and with mineral nitrogen fertilization at 90 and 170 kg ha -1 N rates. Nitrogen fertilization slightly increased plant height and accumulation of biomass. Moisture content in the biomass of swards applied with a higher rate of mineral N decreased more slowly compared with the lower rate. Biomass annual yield in the second and third years ranged from 15.8 to 17.1 t ha -1 ; however, significant effect of nitrogen fertilization was not observed. Nitrogen fertilization had a significant influence on N content and lignin in the biomass. The variation of values of the elements relevant for combustion (carbon and sulphur) in the biomass was negligibly influenced by nitrogen fertilization. The relatively low ash content and heating value, amounting to 8.5 MJ kg -1 achieved even without nitrogen fertilization, makes A. dubia a promising energy crop in the northern part of the temperate climate zone. More studies and analyses on A. dubia are needed to ascertain the fertilization effect on biomass yield, biomass quality and biomass properties for combustion in senescent plants.
