Endovascular embolization with Onyx in the management of sinus pericranii: a case report

Abstract: Sinus pericranii (SP) is an uncommon and usually asymptomatic communication between intra- and extracranial venous drainage pathways in which blood flow can circulate bidirectionally through abnormal dilated veins through a skull defect. Diagnosis and evaluation of the venous drainage pattern is important if treatment is contemplated. Cerebral angiography with the use of Dyna CT can be helpful in the diagnosis of SP and its relationship with the skull defect. The authors report what is, to the best of … Show more

“…There are reports in the literature on a few small series of patients treated surgically, 13,36 whereas conservative treatment has been described in some isolated cases. 1,40 Since 2009, a few cases of endovascular treatment have been reported, 7,22,37 but no large series exists yet. In the past 9 years, our management strategy for SP has progressively changed.…”

“…Le traitement fait appel à une résection chirurgicale avec ligature de la veine émissaire ou à des techniques endovasculaires d'embolisation par ponction directe et utilisant récemment l'onyx [4]. Le sinus pericranii est habituellement asymptomatique.…”

“…Although surgery may be curative, complication such as hemorrhage as a result of dural sinus laceration has been reported. More recently, endovascular therapies utilizing onyx and N-butyl cyanoacrylate embolization of the connection between the dural sinus and the diploic vein have been used to treat SP [16,17]. Risk of complication may include occlusion of the dural sinus from onyx or glue extravasation.…”
