“…But, according to the study of Van Horn, stored cat corneas were found to have a marked increase in trypan blue vital staining and cellular disruption of endothelium, if corneas were incubated for two h at 35 Њ C in fresh tissue culture medium before evaluation (40). In this present study, the corneas were warmed up to room temperature for two h before evaluation; therefore, it is suspected that the increased cellular disruption found, as compared to that in other studies, was an effect of temperature.…”

“…Preservation of corneoscleral segments in MK-medium was first reported by McCarey and Kaufman [1974], They demonstrated that rabbit corneal endothelium remained ultrastructurally and functionally intact up to 14 days when stored in M K-medium [ Van Horn et al, 1975;Breslin et al, 1976], Further laboratory studies confirmed the viability of human endothelium stored in MK-medium for at least 4 days [Holtmann et al, 1976;Van Horn et al, 1975;McCarey, 1977], In order to find out the effect of pre servation techniques on keratoplasty, a comparison of the visual acuity in cases with keratoconus (good prognosis) and cases with corneal opacity with vascularization (bad prognosis) was done. The comparison of the two independent mean values is shown in table X.…”

“…This does not mean that the warming caused the disruption; rather, the warming allowed the nonviable endothelial cells to become manifest. 3 Warming the tissue to 36°C mimics the change in temperature that occurs with cor¬ neal transplantation. Because the tis¬ sue remains in preservative medium rather than in a recipient eye during warming, our method is not complete¬ ly analogous to the clinical situation.…”

“…3 We investigated the effects of warming before fixation by storing two corneal pairs in K-Sol and two in CSM for two weeks at 4°C. One cornea was warmed to 36°C for two hours, and the fellow cornea was kept at room temperature for two hours before fixation.…”
