Abstract:Corneal endothelial polymegathism and pleomorphism can decrease with properly prescribed and monitored overnight corneal reshaping lenses over some standard contact lenses.
“…We do not mean that previous researchers assume ECD or surface area as a single measurement of the degree of polymegethism. However, those parameters have been considered as single indicators of endothelial health, as several clinical studies in the fields of cataract surgery [12], diabetes, corneal refractive surgery [10], refractive surgery with intra-ocular lens implantation [17], contact lenses [6,18] and penetrating keratoplasty [10,19] use ECD as unique or major outcome for monitoring endothelium health changes related with the condition/intervention. Other studies combine several parameters to characterize endothelial health of the cornea within these areas of research [7,9,[20][21][22][23].…”
Two single quantitative parameters of endothelial polymegethism and pleomorphism (POLi and PLEi respectively) have been derived from the data obtained with a commercial non-contact specular microscope. These parameters have been demonstrated to identify differences between the corneal endothelium of diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
