Endothelial dysfunction links erectile dysfunction to heart disease

Abstract: Erectile dysfunction (ED) and coronary artery disease (CAD) overlap in risk factors, aetiology and clinical outcomes. It has become clear that ED is an important marker of vascular disease throughout the arterial tree--including CAD, stroke and diabetes. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a close association between ED and vascular disease. The shared aetiological factor is endothelial dysfunction. The fact that ED tends to precede the onset of symptoms of other vascular diseases--because blood vessels … Show more

“…[18][19][20][21][22] Endothelial dysfunction occurs when the inner lining of the blood vessels is damaged by 23 reported that brachial artery flowmediated vasodilation (endothelium-dependent) was reduced in patients with ED (1.3%) versus those patients without ED (2.4%; P ¼ 0.014). Also, vasodilation to nitroglycerin (endothelium-independent) was reduced in ED patients (13.0%) versus non-ED patients (17.8%; Po0.05).…”

“…13 The role of endothelial dysfunction is well established in coronary artery disease and its risk factors. 14,15 Normal erectile function is primarily a vascular event that relies heavily on vasodilation, which occurs largely due to endothelially derived nitric oxide (NO).…”

“…[1][2][3] One common denominator for these diseases is vascular endothelial dysfunction, and ED may be a marker for the potential development of vascular disease including myocardial infarction. [4][5][6] Vascular endothelium plays a pivotal role in pathogenesis of numerous thrombotic and inflammatory disorders. 7 In recent years, the interest for endothelial cell-derived submicroscopic membranous vesicles, termed microparticles, has substantially increased, not only because of their procoagulant properties but also because of their putative role in inflammatory processes and their ability to directly affect endothelial functions.…”
