Endothelial alterations in 712 keratoconus patients

Abstract: Endothelial cell density (ECD) decreases and CV increases significantly with increasing tomographic severity of keratoconus. In patients with RCL compared to eyes without CL wear, we found a statistically significantly higher CV in the endothelial cell size.

“…Previous studies have found that the corneal ECD and morphology are important factors affecting different stages of KCN. 24 , 25 We designed this study in order to evaluate and compare the morphology and characteristics of corneal endothelial cell in bilateral KCN patients with and without Vogt's striae using the Topcon SP2000P non-contact specular microscope.…”

“…argued that the presence of KCN did not affect the ECD, 18 while Goebels and colleagues emphasizes that as the severity of KCN increase, ECD decreases and CV increases. 24 Also, Timocin et al. conducted a research study to assess the ECD in keratoconic eyes and indicated that the change in ECD did not depend on the CCT and different stages of KCN.…”

“…10 Goebels et al observed that ECD decreased and CV increased with the progression of keratoconus in their work containing 712 KC cases. 9 Our study comprised only those patients who had not undergone a surgical procedure previously and had no contact lens use history. When the participants were classi ed according to the KC stage, the number of patients in the severe stages was lower.…”

“…Some publications reported lower endothelial cell density (ECD) compared to healthy eyes, whereas others observed no signi cant change. [9][10][11][12] Similarly, several publications in the literature report a decrease in the hexagonal cell percentage (HCP) and an increase in the coe cient of variation (CV) in KC cases, while some studies report no change. [9][10][11][12] Reasons for the different results may be related to the number of patients included in the studies, the distribution of the age range of the patients, the stages of keratoconus, and the previous treatment approaches.…”
