Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for primary palmar hyperidrosis

Abstract: In view of the low morbidity and zero mortality rate of this surgical technique, we recommend it as a method of treatment for palmar hyperhidrosis. Thoracic sympathectomy eliminates palmar hyperhidrosis with minimal recurrence (1% in our series) and produces a high rate of patient satisfaction.

“…ETS had good outcomes for most of the patients and a low rate of complications, regardless of the different level of resection used, as also seen in other studies over recent years. 11,12 CH is frequently observed after ETS and has been described in nearly all previous studies. In some patients, the abundant compensatory sweating may be difficult to control and therefore may worsen their QoL and be a reason for them to regret the surgery.…”

“…The mean operative time in our study was 26.25 minutes, while in the study done by Chen et al the mean operative time was 39.5 minutes, the prolonged operative time is mostly due to presence of adhesions between the chest wall and upper lobes and the bilateral ETS [24]- [26].…”

“…The overall satisfaction rate is dependent on the magnitude and impact on the quality of life of the problem solved by Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) [25]. Almost many authors revealed that patients recognize a high degree of patient satisfaction, as patients recognize that hyperhidrosis is a serious social problem that affect their interaction with other people, work, drive, or try to maintain their self-confidence and character [26]. Table 7 show the literature review of compensatory sweating and rate satisfaction.…”

“…In the fourth, the mean operative time for each side was 15 minutes for T3-T4 sympathectomy and 28 minutes for T2-T4 sympathectomy 18 . In another study, mean postoperative stay was 1.1 days 22 . These evidences demonstrate that the operative time is short for the endoscopic surgery, varying according to the procedure of choice, and the average hospital stay does not exceed two days.…”
