Abstract: BackgroundEndoscopic ear surgery is an emerging technique with recent literature highlighting advantages over the traditional microscopic approach. This study aims to characterize the current status of endoscopic ear surgery in Canada and better understand the beliefs and concerns of the otolaryngology – head & neck surgery community regarding this technique.MethodsA cross-sectional survey study of Canadian otolaryngologists was performed. “…This surgical technique is suitable for chronic otitis media, malformations of the auditory ossicles, traumatic damage to the ossicles, cholesteatomatous otitis media, otoslcerosis, and other diseases [1][2][3][4][5][6] . Similarly, the number of papers reporting the advantages of endoscopic middle ear visualization has also been increasing in the last years [6][7][8][9] .…”

“…These advantages include improved visualization around difficult angles and deep recesses, and the decreased need for extra exposure to achieve adequate illumination and visualization of the operative field . In a survey of ear surgeons who use endoscopes in their surgical practice, the vast majority of endoscopic procedures involved removal of cholesteatoma and tympanoplasty . We report the first documented case of an endoscope‐assisted resection of an intravestibular schwannoma.…”

“…[1][2][3] The virtues of being able to view and access the challenging recesses of the middle ear are well documented, where the endoscope serves well as an adjunct to the standard microscopic approach. Cholesteatoma may be tackled entirely endoscopically, particularly where disease is more limited, such that an atticotomy-type approach will achieve disease clearance.…”
