Endoscopic Diagnostic System Using Autofluorescence

Abstract: A fluorescence imaging system (Xillix LIFE – Lung Fluorescence Endoscopy system) using fluorescence for the accurate diagnosis and early detection of lesions through an endosocope has been developed. This system has applied an optical diagnostic technology to functionally diagnose lesions which have been difficult to morphologically recognize or are occult with conventional endoscope. The benefit of this system in the diagnosis of lung cancer has already been confirmed in the US and Japan, and feasibility of t… Show more

“…The captured signals are respectively transformed into red or blue colors, and are displayed on the monitor in real-time as a color image [9,11]. While the normal colorectal mucosa appears green, a lesion that attenuates the excitation light or the endogenous fluorophores, including thickened mucosa due to neoplasm and inflammation, will appear in magenta (Fig.…”

“…In this aspect, the diagnostic ability of NBI is closely associated with the ability to recognize vascular patterns, thus the diagnostic accuracy of NBI appears to be dependent on the experience of individual endoscopists. AFI is another novel IEE technology that can capture fluorescence (500-630 nm) emitted from the fluorophores in human tissue [9,10]. AFI can assess lesions without any morphological assessments based on the fluorescence intensity.…”

“…The signal density of either red or green in the traced area was measured and converted to a reverse gamma value which corresponded to the strength of the output from each CCD signal. The ratio of the reverse gamma value of green (fluorescence) divided by that of red (reflex) was defined as the fluorescence index (F index; FI=green (fluorescence)/red (reflex)) [18][19][20][21]. This quantification was performed 1 month after the endoscopic examination by endoscopists who were not aware of the endoscopic or histological information of the patient.…”

“…Autofluorescence (AF) endoscopy is a novel imaging technology in which endogenous fluorophores in the tissues are stimulated when the mucosa is illuminated by a shortwavelength light and a fluorescent light of a longer wavelength (6)(7)(8)(9)(10). Recently, several groups have reported on the usefulness of AF endoscopy in the differential diagnosis of colorectal mucosal lesions, suggesting that AF endoscopy is useful for distinguishing adenomas from hyperplastic polyps (11)(12)(13)(14)(15).…”
