Endophytic taxol-producing fungi from bald cypress, Taxodium distichum

Abstract: Pestalotiopsis microspora occurs as a range of strains in bald cypress, Taxodium distichurn. The organisms live as endophytes in the bark, phloem and xylem, and isolates show differences in cultural and microscopic characteristics on common laboratory media. Many of these fungi make taxol as determined by the reactivity of partially purified culture extracts with specific monoclonal antibodies against taxol. In the case of one strain of P. microspora (CP-4), taxol was isolated from culture medium and was shown… Show more

“…Its ethyl acetate extract displayed significant antifungal activities against three plant pathogens, Fusarium graminearum, Botrytis cinerea and Phytophthora nicotianae. Bioassay-directed fractionation of this extract has led to the isolation of nine phthalide derivatives (1-9) including three new ones (1)(2)(3). Compounds (1-9) displayed significant antifungal activities against the above three plant pathogens ( Figure 1).…”

“…The isolation of Taxol-producing endophyte Taxomyces anderanae has provided a different approach to find a cheaper and additional product via microorganism fermentation [130]. Taxol has also been found in a amount of unusual genera of fungal endophytes either related or not to yews, such as Taxodium distichum [93] ;Wollemia nobilis [134]., Phyllosticta spinarum [94]; Bartalinia robillardoides [42] ;Pestalotiopsis terminaliae [42] ;Botryodiplodia theobromae [95].…”
