“…A significant up-regulation of endometrial cylooxygenase-2 gene is reported in bitches with pyometra (Silva et al 2009). Recently, we have reported upregulation of IL-6, IL-8, COX-2 and PGFS in the pyometra bitches associated with endometrial atrophy (Singh et al 2018). From this study, it is concluded that serum PGFM is elevated in SIRS+ canine pyometra and can aid in disease monitoring along with routine serum biochemistry.…”

“…11,13 In addition, it has been demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokine genes, such as prostaglandin synthesis enzymes, are upregulated in the endometrium of female dogs suffering from CEH-P but not in normal diestrous dogs. [34][35][36] In vitro canine experiments have demonstrated the importance of prostaglandins in regulating uterine vascular tone. 37 Additionally, in dogs, acetylcholine-induced uterine artery vasodilatation probably occurs through the release of endotheliumderived relaxing factors, such as nitric oxide, endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor, and prostacyclin.…”

“…These findings may probably be due to chronic inflammation and/or persistent hyperplasia after the resolution of the pyometra 11,13 . In addition, it has been demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokine genes, such as prostaglandin synthesis enzymes, are upregulated in the endometrium of female dogs suffering from CEH‐P but not in normal diestrous dogs 34‐36 . In vitro canine experiments have demonstrated the importance of prostaglandins in regulating uterine vascular tone 37 .…”

“…More recently, a high expression of inflammatory, cell proliferation and angiogenesis markers were verified in pyometra bitches, in comparison to CEHmucometra (Veiga et al, 2017). Additionally, Singh et al (2018) showed a higher expression of inflammatory cytokines in atrophic pyometra compared to hyperplastic pyometra. Thus, canine pyometra has its course marked by increased uterine blood flow and endometrial morphofunctional changes, along with important clinical signs that deserve special medical attention.…”
