Endometrial Adenocarcinoma With Signet Ring Cells

Abstract: The presence of signet ring cells in a carcinoma within the uterine corpus strongly raises the possibility of a metastasis from a primary tumor in the breast, gastrointestinal tract, or elsewhere. Signet ring cells are extremely rare in primary endometrial adenocarcinomas with only a single prior case report. We report 2 cases of primary endometrial adenocarcinoma, one of mucinous and the other of endometrioid type, with a significant component of signet ring cells. One of the neoplasms arose within adenomyosi… Show more

“…One was associated with concurrent intestinal metaplasia of the endocervical canal. Two cases of endometrial adenocarcinomas with signet ring cells have been reported in the literature [6] and an additional case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the endometrium was found to have a gastric phenotype on immunohistochemistry mimicking a minimal deviation adenocarcinoma of the cervix [7]. As in this case, all were associated with more typical appearing endometrioid adenocarcinoma.…”

“…In our case, negativity to Vimentin and positivity to CEA proved useful in excluding primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the endometrium an entity even rarer than PCSRCC [10-12]. …”

“…Mooney et al [1] did not specify the percentage of the SRC component. We believe that the title of the paper is not accurate, so that the tumour would be defined as “endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the uterine corpus with SRCs component.” The title of the case described by Boyd et al [3] is correct. The authors described a grade I EA in an endometrial polyp, with presence of small foci of solid tumour composed of SRCs.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge primary carcinoma of the endometrium with SRCs has only been observed in four previous cases [1–3] (Table 1). In fact primary pure endometrial SRCs adenocarcinomas of the genital tract are extremely rare, while more often they may be seen admixed with other more conventional types.…”
