End-point effector stress mediators in neuroimmune interactions: their role in immune system homeostasis and autoimmune pathology

Abstract: Much evidence has identified a direct anatomical and functional link between the brain and the immune system, with glucocorticoids (GCs), catecholamines (CAs), and neuropeptide Y (NPY) as its end-point mediators. This suggests the important role of these mediators in immune system homeostasis and the pathogenesis of inflammatory autoimmune diseases. However, although it is clear that these mediators can modulate lymphocyte maturation and the activity of distinct immune cell types, their putative role in the pa… Show more

“…Adrenal weight is often used as an indirect index of cumulative ACTH exposure, as ACTH stimulates adrenal growth (Ulrich-Lai et al 2006). Thymus weight is often used as an indirect index of cumulative glucocorticoid exposure, as glucocorticoids induce thymic shrinkage (Ulrich-Lai et al 2006; Dimitrijevic et al 2012). …”

“…The excessive psychological and emotional stress has negatively affected both mental and physical health conditions [1]. Stress can directly evoke dysfunctions of brain activity, immune system, cardio-vascular, neuroendocrine, and central nervous and sympathetic nervous systems via hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation [2], [3]. Therefore, excessive and uncontrolled psycho-emotional stress is closely linked to the various spectrums of disorders, such as depression, anxiety, concentration disorders, cancer recurrence, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic fatigue syndrome [4][6].…”
