Encapsulated Conducting Polymers

Abstract: Conjugated polymers have an enormous range of potential applications, and recent work shows how many of these can be realized practically. Encapsulation can offer advantages in terms of separating polymer chains to inhibit interchain effects, improving the mechanical, thermal, and chemical stabilities of the assemblies, and possibly allowing individual molecular wires to be addressed. The Figure shows a schematic representation of a polyrotaxane, i.e., a polymer threaded into a host tube and held in place by e… Show more

“…Furthermore, the encapsulation effectively isolates adjacent polymer chains and may improve their thermal and chemical stabilities. [3] Recently, Kim and coworkers demonstrated that by incorporating a blue-light-emitting polymer into the interlayer space of layered silicates, the color purity and stability are enhanced. [4] The blue-emission stability of the nanocomposites was attributed to the reduced polymer-polymer interchain interactions and inhibited oxygen percolation, achieved by isolating some of the conjugated polymer chains within the layered structure.…”

“…One of the most important classes of composites is the materials obtained by the incorporation of various kinds of polymers of controlled physico-chemical properties into porous inorganic material. The insertion of the polymers into the inorganic host cavities can be obtained carrying out the polymerization process inside the cavities themselves (Cardin, 2002). If the initiator is covalently bound to inner surface of the host the polymer can be synthesized directly inside the host pores (Spange et al, 2001).…”

“…[9] Recently, a few researchers have turned their attention to the encapsulation of active small molecular EL materials for application as EL devices. In practice, capsules prepared using several dendrimers or hyperbranched polymers gave an EL device with excellent stability, [10,11] though the procedures of encapsulation required were very complicated.…”
