Enabling the Industrial Internet of Things to Cloud Continuum in a Real City Environment

Abstract: The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is one of the most demanding IoT applications. The insertion of industries in the context of smart cities and other smart environments, allied with new communication technologies such as 5G, brings a new horizon of possibilities and new requirements. These requirements include low latency, the support of a massive quantity of devices and data, and the need to support horizontal communications between devices at the edge level. To make this feasible, it is necessary to e… Show more

“…Other connectivity standards are, for example, Highway Addressable Remote Transducer Protocol (HART), WirelessHart and Data-Distribution Service (DSS) [37]. Cabrini et al [42] investigated a Helix Multilayered platform offering an Industrial IoT service platform extending the horizontal digital continuum towards Fog and Edge layer based on open standards. They were able to route "context information through the near edge and the city's cloud datacenter".…”

“…IoT application in industry leads to the creation of Smart Factories where almost all objects such as machinery, devices and products are equipped with sensors connecting each to each and to the Internet [52]. Industrial IoT is one of the most demanding applications [42]. This in turn provides advanced visibility into operations through real-time access to information.…”

“…The information obtained from the ITS station allows the announcement of the necessary awareness information about VRU -location, altitude, heading and speed, but also orientation, direction, size and weight class and VRU profile. To obtain this information set, the information from the smartphone from inertial sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and orientation sensors), from the cellular signal strength and WiFi, Bluetooth information and GNSS/GPS sensor is fused using the Fused Sensor Provider API from Google 28 . The announcement of this awareness information is made with VRU awareness messages (VAMs) sent by the smartphones.…”

“…The integration of industries in the context of smart cities and other smart environments, allied with new communication technologies such as 5G, brings a new horizon of possibilities and new requirements. To attend this type of application, we studied the integration of the Helix Multi-layered IoT platform and its operating modes into the ATCLL, showcasing a real-world deployment [28]. The Helix Multi-layered platform was deployed and evaluated in this city platform to identify its potential to support services and applications that require operation in an edge environment, as depicted in Figure 35.…”

“…Precision plays a pivotal role in industrial processes, influenced by factors such as safety requirements, while communication reliability becomes paramount, particularly given the obstacles posed by substantial metal components. The incorporation of AI-enabled Industrial IoT (IIoT) emerges as a potential enhancement in this context, as examined by Cabrini et al [8].…”
