Enabling large scale and high definition simulation of natural systems with vector models and JDEVS

Abstract: This paper describes a new methodology to enable large scale high resolution environmental simulation. Unlike the vast majority of environmental modeling techniques that split the space into cells, the use of a vector space is proposed here. A phenomena will then be described by its shape, decomposed in several points that can move using a displacement vector. The shape also have a dynamic structure, as each point can instantiate new point because of a change in the space properties or to obtain a better resol… Show more

“…Specific formalisms exist for the specification of DES, among those DEVS (Zeigler, 2000) has already been applied to the study of discrete, continuous and hybrid systems. Many specialisations of DEVS exist for different applications; Vector-DEVS (Filippi and Bisgambiglia 2002) has been hal-00438619, version 1 -4 Dec 2009 developed for the specification of models with moving dynamic interfaces. In the next section Vector-DEVS is used to formalize the markers method.…”

“…Another continuous-space model designed with DEVS is presented in [28]. Although it also represents a forest fire, it differs from the model of [25] in that vectors are used for the positions of fire fighters. The fire itself is represented by a set of cells in a lattice.…”

“…The fire itself is represented by a set of cells in a lattice. Similar to [25], the model in [28] has a dynamic structure, but in this case the dynamic structure is used to create and delete links between DEVS fire fighter models and DEVS cell models.…”

“…An example of such a case would be the forest fire model that is described in [13]. This particular example integrates a variation of DEVS designed in particular for dynamic structures [14].…”
