Enabling IoT Platform Interoperability Using a Systematic Development Approach by Example

Abstract: Today, the IoT landscape consists of a large number of vertical IoT platforms that are rarely interconnected. To enable creation of applications across platform and domain boundaries interoperability needs to be established between IoT platforms. As this is a challenging task, we present in this paper how to simplify it by utilizing a systematic software development process based on behavior-and domain-driven development. Additionally, we illustrate this process using an example of two indoor navigation platfo… Show more

“…To overcome the interoperability gaps at the data level, the parties need to share their ontologies. However, as noted by Schneider, et al in [18], very few IoT platforms provide formally defined ontologies and due to the lack of familiarity with the Semantic Web technologies, many of the IoT platform owners or providers seem to find it challenging to create such models for their platforms.…”

“…The symbIoTe project [10,16] provides an interoperability framework to allow cooperation among IoT platforms to establish federations, aiming at the creation of innovative cross-domain applications. It offers mediation services and makes use of systematic development methodologies [18] to address the problem of interoperability across different IoT platforms. However, only the components enabling the registration and discovery of services are located in the cloud and each platform needs to deploy, configure and manage an adapter to connect to other platforms and perform data mapping and transformation.…”

“…Further, AdaptAI provides a set of rules that considers several transformations for the collected knowledge from sensors. Another software development process is described in Reference 62based on behavior‐driven development and domain‐driven design using symbIoTe platform. Their approach provides semantic interoperability between two IoT platforms cope with BLE‐based indoor localization.…”

“…The importance of the interoperability can be viewed from the current works that are focused on this topic. For instance, in [7], the connection of co-existing IoT platforms under multiple domains is rendered, trying to integrate them by using software, from a systematic perspective. In contrast, others, like [8], are fostering the IoT interoperability via new open frameworks applicable at large-scale.…”
