Emulsions Made of Oils from Seeds of GM Flax Protect V79 Cells against Oxidative Stress

Abstract: Polyunsaturated fatty acids, sterols, and hydrophilic phenolic compounds are components of flax oil that act as antioxidants. We investigated the impact of flax oil from transgenic flax in the form of emulsions on stressed Chinese hamster pulmonary fibroblasts. We found that the emulsions protect V79 cells against the H2O2 and the effect is dose dependent. They reduced the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species and protected genomic DNA against damage. The rate of cell proliferation increased upon trea… Show more

“…The effect was accompanied by changes in gene expression, particularly those coding for histone, acetylase, deacetylase, proapoptotic, pro‐inflammatory, and anti‐inflammatory genes. This beneficial effect correlated with the amount of squalene present in emulsions . Likewise, dietary squalene downregulated cyclooxygenase‐2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase, thereby improving the oxidative events, in an acute colitis model in mice.…”

“…A collective assessment of the p53-induced antitumor activity of the tested compounds for all performed assays was carried out using multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). The MCDA was performed according to literature procedures [11][12][13]. The assay results were calculated according to the formula: b = (exp-obs) 2 /exp (exp-expected value; obs-observed value).…”

“…For in vitro studies, the raspberry oil emulsions were formulated in accordance with a protocol developed in a study by Skorkowska-Telichowska et al [ 26 ]. One gram of soybean lecithin, 0.5 ml of Tween 80, and 2.5 ml of oil were mixed gradually and completed with a 5 ml of an aqueous phase containing glycerol 25% v/v.…”
