“…The most often stated diseases are diabetes [4,15], rheumatic diseases, treatment with corticosteroids and cytotoxins [3,16,17], leukemia in children [18], lymphoma following chemotherapy with development of disseminated strongyloidosis [19] and ERF treated with peritoneal dialysis [7]. Other trigger factors mentioned are acute pancreatic infection [20,21], cancer of stomach [22] and pancreas [6], gastric phytobezoar [23], the ingestion of large quantities of Coca Cola [24], infarction of the digestive tube wall [25,26], gastric mucormycosis [16] and anorexic-bulimic nutritional disturbance with acute stomach dilatation [27]. The altered gastric mucosa is invaded by gas-forming bacteria, possibly due to local spread of the infection or hematogenous dissemination from a remote focus such as an otitis [3].…”

“…In the literature we have found seven cases in which endoscopy of the upper digestive tract was done as part of the diagnostic procedure. The most frequent findings included erythematous, erosive and hemorrhagic-inflammatory, at times already necrotic changes of the mucosa, thickened gastroplication, and only in one case the characteristic "pavement" image owing to the gas bubbles under the mucosa [2,16,20,21,25,27,31]. The advantage of endoscopy is that it allows us to take specimens for bacteriological analysis directly from the affected organ, its disadvantage is the risk of stomach perforation [6].…”

“…These can be categorised into obstructive, traumatic and pulmonary mechanisms producing a mucosal tear, decreased mucosal integrity or a ruptured pulmonary bullae leading to emphysema. Multiple reports have since described this finding in newborns to adults and from infectious EG 8 to non-infectious causes such as instrumentation, 9 orthotic devices, 10 gastric outlet obstruction, 11 ingested toxins, 12 pulmonary disease, 13 pancreatitis, 14 atypical hernias, 15 gastric volvulus or small bowel obstruction. 16 Distinguishing between EG and other more benign causes of GE is important to ensure the patient receives the most appropriate management.…”

“…Gastroscopy may reveal empysema just beneath the mucosal surface or areas of necrosis (Bloodworth et al 1987). More recently, endoscopic ultrasonography has been utilised in man to detect emphysematous gastritis (Soon et al 2005).…”
