Empatica E3 - A wearable wireless multi-sensor device for real-time computerized biofeedback and data acquisition

Abstract: The Empatica E3 is a wearable wireless multisensor device for real-time computerized biofeedback and data acquisition. The E3 has four embedded sensors: photoplethysmograph (PPG), electrodermal activity (EDA), 3-axis accelerometer, and temperature. It is small, light and comfortable and it is suitable for almost all real-life applications. The E3 operates both in streaming mode for real-time data processing using a Bluetooth low energy interface and in recording mode using its internal flash memory. With E3, i… Show more

“…Physiological monitoring. We measured heart rate using the Empatica E4, a physiological monitoring device that yields clinical-grade heart rate via photoplethysmography measured at 64Hz from a wristband (Garbarino, Lai, Tognetti, Picard, & Bender, 2014). All but one participant with PWS tolerated this device.…”

“…Physiological data were collected using the E4 wristband [26]. The E4 wristband has four sensors integrated in its case: a photoplethysmography sensor (to measure heart rate, heart rate variability, and inter-beat interval), a triaxial accelerometer (to measure acceleration, but also to detect movement patterns), an infrared thermometer (to gauge peripheral skin temperature), and an electrodermal response sensor (to assess arousal).…”

“…They were not informed about the aim of the study; in particular, they did not know that some of the sounds were ASD cries. Only during the first part of the experiment, the Blood Volume Pulse (BVP) signal was recorded with an Empatica E4 device, a wearable wireless multisensor wristband (Garbarino, Lai, Bender, Picard, & Tognetti, 2014). Non-dominant arm was used to place the device and all subjects indicated their left arms as nondominant.…”
