Emotions: The Voice of the Unconscious

Abstract: Abstract. In the paper the idea is presented that emotions are the result of a high dimensional optimization process happening in the unconscious mapped onto the low dimensional conscious. Instead of framing emotions as a separate subcomponent of our cognitive architecture, we argue for emotions as the main characteristic of the communication between the unconscious and the conscious. We see emotions as the conscious experiences of affect based on complex internal states. Based on this holistic view we recomme… Show more

“…It should be noted that questions about emotions are fundamental in psychology and play an important role in understanding mind and behavior [10]. Recently, an interesting idea about this role was presented: emotion is a medium of communication between the unconscious and the conscious in the human mind [11]. According to this idea, emotion is seen as the conscious perception of the complex mapping processes from the unconscious space into the low-dimensional space of the conscious.…”

“…People outside of psychological science often equate the unconscious with processing of stimuli, which are too weak or short to enter the conscious awareness and, therefore, are referred to as subliminal. In fact, the unconscious information processing is not necessarily associated with presentations of subliminal stimuli and runs continuously as a parallel background process in the human mind (Rauterberg 2010).…”
