Familiar music facilitates memory retrieval in adults with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. This raises the possibility that music can be used as a rehabilitative tool to aid memory abilities more generally. However, the mechanisms behind this effect, and its generality, are unclear because of a lack of parallel work in healthy aging. In particular, exposure to familiar music enhances spontaneous recall of memories directly cued by the music, but it is unknown whether such effects extend to deliberate recall more generally — e.g., to memories not directly linked to the music being played. It is also unclear whether familiar music cues boost recall of specific episodes versus more generalized semantic memories, or whether its effects are partly driven by domain-general mechanisms (e.g., improved mood). In the current study, we will examine the effects of familiar music on deliberate recall and differentiate potential underlying mechanisms. We will expose healthy adults ages 65-80 years old (N = 75) to familiar music clips from earlier in life, unfamiliar music clips, and non-musical audio clips across three study sessions. Immediately after each clip, we will assess free recall of remote memories for pre-selected events. Those memories will then be scored for episodic and semantic details using the Autobiographical Interview. We hypothesize that familiar music may enhance recall of specific events, such that participants will recall more episodic details after exposure to familiar music than unfamiliar music or non-musical audio. We will also test a competing hypothesis that familiar music may prompt more general recollections of periods of life, and thus will increase recall of semantic details in comparison with the unfamiliar music and no-music conditions. The results of this study will advance knowledge of the mechanisms by which music affects memory, with potential implications for the use of music as a therapeutic device for declining memory.

Automated Scoring of the Autobiographical Interview with Natural Language Processing

The Autobiographical Interview has been used in more than two hundred studies to assess the content of autobiographical memories. In a typical experiment, participants recall memories, which are then scored manually for internal details (episodic details from the central event) and external details (largely non-episodic details). Scoring these narratives requires a significant amount of time. As a result, large studies with this procedure are often impractical, and even conducting small studies is time-consuming. To reduce scoring burden and enable larger studies, we developed an approach to automatically score responses with natural language processing. We fine-tuned an existing language model (distilBERT) to identify the amount of internal and external content in each sentence. These predictions were aggregated to obtain internal and external content estimates for each narrative. We evaluated our model by comparing manual scores with automated scores in five datasets. We found that our model performed well across datasets. In four datasets, we found a strong correlation between internal detail counts and the amount of predicted internal content. In these datasets, manual and automated external scores were also strongly correlated, and we found minimal misclassification of content. In a fifth dataset, our model performed well after additional preprocessing. To make automated scoring available to other researchers, we provide a Colab notebook that is intended to be used without additional coding.

Los estímulos emocionales son mejor recordados que los estímulos neutros. La música, como estímulo emocional, modula la memoria de estímulos de otra modalidad; puede cambiar el estado de ánimo y generar un mejor recuerdo de material congruente con él (hipótesis de congruencia). El objetivo del presente trabajo es estudiar el efecto de la música activante y relajante sobre la memoria verbal emocional en adultos jóvenes, y analizar el efecto de la congruencia del estado de ánimo sobre el tipo de material recordado. Se les administró una lista de palabras, positivas, negativas y neutras, a 33 adultos. Se utilizó música positiva activante yrelajante, o ruido blanco, como tratamiento post-aprendizaje. Se midió el estado de ánimo. Se les tomó una tarea de recuerdo inmediato. Los resultados indicaron un mejor recuerdo de palabras totales y negativas en el recuerdo libre en sujetos expuestos a música activante. La música activante y relajante generó disminución de la ansiedad, en tanto que la condición control generó un aumento de la hostilidad. Estos resultados apoyan la idea de que la música puede ser utilizada como tratamiento para modular recuerdos verbales, aunque no se halló efecto de congruencia con el estado de ánimo.
