Emotional aspects of childhood career development: importance and future agenda

Abstract: Childhood is a central period for career and social-emotional development. However, the literature covering childhood career development and the role of emotions in careers is scarce. In this article, we advocate for the consideration of emotions in childhood career development. Emotional aspects of children's career exploration, key-figures and interests, as well as of childhood antecedents of lifelong career processes are presented. “…Considering the related literature, there are studies that focus on relations between career development and demographic factors (Işıklar and Bozgeyikli, 2010), parental attachment (Bacanlı and Dursun, 2011), decision making styles (Yayla and Bacanlı, 2011), life satisfaction and state anxiety (Işık, 2014), emotions (Oliveira, et al, 2015), hope and career adaptation (Peila-Shuster, 2018). There are few studies regarding childhood career development that has been examined in child career development (Andrews et al, 2014;Liu et al, 2014;Watson et al, 2015).…”

“…From this standpoint, career exploration is viewed as a "process of gaining understanding about oneself and the labor world, as well as of how self and environment may interact to produce desirable outcomes" (Cheung, 2015, 157) [10]. The self-and-environment exploration can be seen as two aspects of a single process (Oliveira et al, 2016) [11] in which attitudes, cognitions, behaviors, and emotions interact (Oliveira et al, 2015;Taveira and Rodríguez-Moreno, 2003) [12,13]. The cognitive component concerns the knowledge children have acquired about themselves and their educational and social world.…”

“…Recently, several researchers have analyzed different dimensions that characterize and are relevant for understanding children’s career development. These dimensions include knowledge about occupations (Ferrari et al, 2015), the influence of parents in children career aspirations and development (Liu, McMahon, & Watson, 2015a,b), the influence of age in the identification of the factors that influence career choices (Howard, Flanagan, Castine, & Walsh, 2015), or the need to integrate the role of emotions in children’s career development (Oliveira et al, 2015). However, because there are scarce studies regarding the efficacy evaluation of career interventions with children in the school context, especially compared to other developmental periods such as adolescence, our understanding of the initial career development stages remains limited (Skorikov & Patton, 2007).…”

“…Given that childhood is a significant career development period (Hartung, 2015; Oliveira, Taveira, & Porfeli, 2015), research in this domain has been increasingly prominent and systematized, as the recent publication of Watson and McMahon’s Career exploration and development in childhood: Perspectives from theory, practice and research (2017) demonstrates.…”
