“…In line with recent research [ 34 ] on the predictive relationship between mental health and self-control, the level of mental health symptoms and not variability predicted the subsequent self-control levels. This adds to the current knowledge from cross-sectional studies of substance use populations, where perceived self-control has been found to be associated with mental distress [ 32 , 35 ]. In addition, self-control outperformed mental health variables in predicting craving intensity and relapse status in time-lagged models in this sample, suggesting that self-control plays an important role as both targets for research, monitoring, and intervention.…”

“…Research provides strong evidence of heightened emotion dysregulation among individuals with substance use problems (Prosek et al, 2018; Wilens et al, 2013), which is often interpreted through the lens of a self-medication model wherein people struggling with negative affect use substances to down-regulate emotional distress or aversive psychological symptoms (Khantzian, 1997). Studies show that people with (vs. without) substance use problems have greater difficulties with emotional awareness and clarity, less access to effective emotion regulation strategies, and greater difficulties controlling impulsive behaviors when distressed (Dingle et al, 2018; Fox et al, 2008; Garke et al, 2021). Likewise, emotion dysregulation is positively associated with substance use severity (Cavicchioli et al, 2019; Garke et al, 2021; Paulus et al, 2018; Tull et al, 2015) and plays a role in continued use of alcohol during and after substance use treatment (Berking et al, 2011).…”
