Este artículo presenta una propuesta de definición de la nueva conversación que se registra a través de la aplicación de chat WhatsApp, y transforma la estructura del diálogo clásico. La calificamos de ‘hiperconversación’ y, a partir del análisis propuesto en el marco teórico, le atribuimos las características de accesible, compleja, espontánea, extensible, interactiva y multicódigo. Estas variables surgen del análisis de la experiencia usuaria de 23 personas sobre el uso de la aplicación y los modos de conversación, a través de entrevistas estructuradas. Se ha utilizado una metodología inductiva basada en la Teoría Fundamentada (Strauss y Corbin, 2002: 21-22) para un análisis asistido con el software Atlas.ti hasta obtener por saturación 28 características relacionadas con la temporalidad, la espacialidad, los formatos comunicativos, así como el carácter social y subjetivo del diálogo mediado por la aplicación. Se concluye que la hiperconversación, por cuanto la tecnología facilita otras oportunidades temporales y espaciales, es cotidiana, refuerza las relaciones (Giang, 2019) y contribuye a la creación de comunidad. En su nuevo estilo presenta diferentes formatos y por tanto es multicódigo, es tanto sincrónica como asincrónica, en presencia o en ausencia, enriquecida, infinita y extensible. Es compleja en itinerarios de lectura, en canales, en tiempos y espacios, son conversaciones paralelas y simultáneas e incluso asíncronas, y ocupan toda la experiencia onlife. La nueva cultura de la conversación trata de responder a los significados, turnos de palabra, la duración de los diálogos, la inclusión de personas interlocutoras, al solapamiento de diálogos e incluso al silencio.

This book offers a collection of state-of-the-art conversation analytic work on the impact of different types of digital technologies and media on social interaction. It furthers our understanding of whether and to what extent the varying practices of digital interaction can be considered adaptations of the basic organisations and resources of co-present face-to-face interaction. The chapters explore the emerging practices in contemporary digital interaction and in interaction related to digital technologies. The volume is organised into four sections according to the platform or type of digital interaction: mobile messaging, social media, video conferencing, and human-computer interaction. Each of the chapters highlights an interactional or linguistic phenomenon – an action, a practice, a sequence, or a larger structure. Some of these are unique to online environments, such as emojis or hashtags, whereas some occur in both online and offline interaction, such as repair initiators and proposal sequences.

Emojis are pictographs added to messages on social media and websites. Researchers have observed that emojis representing kissing faces are often used to close instant messaging conversations. This has been interpreted as an imitation of cheek kissing, a common behavior in some cultural contexts. We analyze the use of seven types of kissing emojis in three corpora of WhatsApp chats, one from Spain (where cheek kisses in face-to-face interaction are commonplace in many situations), the other from Germany (where kisses are occasionally given), and the third from the German-speaking part of Switzerland (where cheek kisses are a common greeting between relatives and friends). To do so, we systematically categorize and compare the use of a sample of these emojis on WhatsApp. The analysis suggests that there are differences between the three corpora in the use of the kissing emojis. The emoji “face throwing a kiss” is often included in closing messages in the Spanish and Swiss-German data, while in the Federal German corpus kisses do not appear at the end of a conversation; using these emojis in openings is uncommon in all three corpora. This suggests that these emojis can exhibit cultural variation, but they do not clearly mirror face-to-face behavior.
