Emerging ThermotolerantCampylobacterSpecies in Healthy Ruminants and Swine

Abstract: Campylobacters other than Campylobacter jejuni or C. coli were isolated in 35% of 343 farms recently analyzed in northern Spain. This study was aimed at identifying at the species level the 120 isolates collected (21 ovine, 52 beef cattle, 44 dairy cattle, and 3 porcine) by species-specific polymerase chain reaction and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. Thus, five species were identified: Campylobacter hyointestinalis (90 isolates), Campylobacter lanienae (12), Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus (10), Campyloba… Show more

“…In that study, C. lanienae was isolated from the feces of healthy abattoir workers in Switzerland. Although C. lanienae has occasionally been isolated from pigs (Schweitzer et al, 2011), cattle (Inglis et al, 2006), and sheep (Oporto and Hurtado, 2011) in countries other than Japan, this bacterium is a minor species of campylobacters in these animals. The primary source of C. lanienae remains unknown.…”

“…Identification of CDT in C. hyointestinalis C. hyointestinalis was isolated and detected from various animals, including pig (Gebhart et al, 1983(Gebhart et al, , 1985(Gebhart et al, , 1990Gorkiewicz et al, 2002), cattle (Gebhart et al, 1985;Oporto & Hurtado, 2011), dog (Chaban et al, 2010), hamster (Gebhart et al, 1985), monkey (Russell et al, 1992), sheep (Oporto & Hurtado, 2011), deer (Hill et al, 1987) and reindeer (Hänninen et al, 2002). Based on these findings C. hyointestinalis was thought to be a pathogen to animals, in particular pigs.…”
