Emerging Metronidazole Resistance in Anaerobes and Mapping Their Susceptibility Behaviour

Abstract: In the present study, anaerobic clinical isolates of Bacteroides fragilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Yersinia enterocolitica were obtained from different clinical specimens and were subjected to molecular typing to detect the gene encoding metronidazole resistance in these isolates. Subsequently, antibacterial activity of drugs was tested against the selected clinical isolates. A total of 53 clinical isolates involving 18 obligate and 35 facultative anaerobic bacteria were recovered from clin… Show more

“…In recent years, decreasing susceptibility has been found to a wide range of antimicrobial agents, including metronidazole among B. fragilis strains, which may limit their therapeutic efficiency in treating infections caused by this organism during the course of metronidazole therapy [ 14 ]. In 8 patients (30.8%) of this study, we isolated metronidazole-resistant B. fragilis by the agar dilution method, but nim genes were not detectable in these isolates.…”

“…This study was nosocomial, and B. fragilis were isolated from hospitalized patients with metronidazole administration for prophylaxis and/or treatment of SSIs. The literature describes an association between isolation of metronidazole-resistant B. fragilis and long-term metronidazole therapy [ 8 ], [ 14 ], [ 21 ]. Increasing numbers of clinical metronidazole-resistant B. fragilis that do not possess nimA-H genes are being reported.…”

“…Metronidazole has been the drug of choice for the treatment of infection caused by anaerobic bacteria worldwide for nearly 40 years but the recent emergence of metronidazole resistance is a matter of great concern (17). In our study, 100% of isolated B. fragilis were susceptible to metronidazole.…”
