This study presents a biophotocatalytic system as a sustainable technology for the recovery of clean water and renewable energy from wastewater, thereby providing a unique opportunity to drive industrialization and global sustainable development throughputs. Herein, inhouse magnetized photocatalyst (Fe-TiO2) with surface area 62.73 m2/g synthesized via co-precipitation, was hypothesized to hasten an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for the treatment of local South Africa municipality wastewater with the benefit of high-quality biogas production. A lab scale UASB process with a working volume of 5 L coupled with two UV-lights (T8 blacklight-blue tube, 365 nm, 18 W) was operated batchwise under mesophilic conditions for the period of 30 days with a constant organic load charge of 2.76 kg COD/m3. d. This biophotocatalytic system performance was investigated and compared with and without the Fe-TiO2 charge (2–6 g) with respect to effluent quality, biogas production and CO2 methanation. Using chemical oxygen demand (COD) measured as the degree of degradation of the pollutants, the best efficiency of 93% COD removal was achieved by a 4 g Fe-TiO2 charge at 14 days and pH of 7.13, as compared to zero charge where only 49.6% degradation was achieved. Under the same charge, cumulative biogas and methane content of 1500 mL/g COD.d and 85% were respectively attained as compared with the control with 400 mL/g COD.d and 65% methane content. Also, the energy produced can be used to offset the energy utilized by the UV-light for the wastewater abatement and other limitations of photocatalysis. The BP system was found to be an eco-friendly and cost-effective technology to be explored in water treatment settings.

The emerging contaminants (ECs) refer to chemical compounds either naturally originated or synthetically modified having potential toxic effects to the environment. The ECs include different pollutants such as biocides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals (antibiotic, analgesics, and hormones) and personal care products (cosmetics, fragrances, and hygiene products). The ECs are considering the top priority pollutants by the European Union (EU) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Among other materials, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of widely used materials for the removal of ECs applying diverse techniques of wastewater decontamination. The momentous advancement of these functional nanostructured materials has found to be cost-effective, reusable, smart materials for the application of ECs removal. The aim of this chapter was to explore the modification routes and advancement of functionalization of CNTs with other functional groups by the reported works. The possible mechanistic insight of ECs removal reactions was also evaluated applying different methods for decontamination reported in the past studies. This review will be significant sources of information of CNTs-based materials for the application of wastewater treatment especially ECs removal from wastewater and ultimate environmental remediation.

in recent years, water and electricity consumption and demand have increased on both national and international levels. This has resulted in an increase in wastewater generation and greenhouse gas emissions due to inadequate waste management systems. In addressing these challenges, the application of anaerobic digestion (AD) presents a robust solution for the treatment of wastewater with the benefits of biogas production if operated efficiently. In this study, a lab-scale 1 L reactor operated under anaerobic conditions at 37.5 °C was employed for the treatment of local South African municipal wastewater. The influence and synergistic effect of influent pH (5-9), hydraulic retention time (HRT, 15-30 days), and magnetite load (0.125-0.875 g/L) were operating variables considered as a function of biogas produced and contaminants removal percentage (colour and COD). The experimental matrix was generated and conducted based on the Box-Behnken design (BBD) of the response surface methodology (RSM). The RSM analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirms that the quadratic models obtained are substantial, with a high coefficient of regression (R 2 ) above 0.98 and p-values below 0.05 for each variable. The optimum conditions of pH of 7.04, magnetite load of 0.42 g/L and HRT of 21 days were obtained. This resulted in desirability of 84% inferring a biogas yield of 93.72 mL/TDS, COD removal of 88.65% and colour removal of 97.55%. The post-analysis of the effluent showed 80 -98% reduction in the volatile solids, which suggests that the high organic content of wastewater was anaerobically converted into biogas.
