Emerging arboviruses in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: Chikungunya and Zika outbreaks, 2014‐2016

Abstract: Considering co-circulation of different arbovirus in RS, including Dengue virus, CHIKV, and ZIKV, and the presence of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in the area, surveillance of patients infected by these viruses contributes to the control and prevention of such diseases. Practical difficulties in diagnosing these infections are discussed.

“…The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is an aggressive and epidemiologically important insect, and its geographical range has significantly expanded over the past decades. As a public health threat, it acts as a vector for many viral agents, including those responsible for dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika fever (Hochedez et al, 2006; Correspondence: Xiao-Guang Chen Gregianini et al, 2017;Liu et al, 2017). Given that it is one of the world's 100 most invasive species, the territory of Ae.…”

The origin of primates from the order Platyrrhini is believed to date from approximately 30 million years ago 25 . These animals arrived in South America and expanded their distribution southwards to southern Patagonia during the Miocen Climate Optima (MCO) and retracted with the rising of the Andes and the global cooling that occurred subsequently 26 .…”
