Emerging 0D Transition‐Metal Dichalcogenides for Sensors, Biomedicine, and Clean Energy

Abstract: Following research on two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), zero-dimensional (0D) TMDs nanostructures have also garnered some attention due to their unique properties; exploitable for new applications. The 0D TMDs nanostructures stand distinct from their larger 2D TMDs cousins in terms of their general structure and properties. 0D TMDs possess higher bandgaps, ultra-small sizes, high surface-to-volume ratios with more active edge sites per unit mass. So far, reported 0D TMDs can be main… Show more

“…As a class of traditional nanomaterials, discover new features of metal chalcogenides and fabrication of hybridizing metal chalcogenides with other materials have been subjects of intensive studies in recent years. Till now, metal chalcogenides have been used in many fields, such as catalysts,115–123 battery,53,109–111,116–128 optical application,136–139 biomedicine,112,124,140–142 gas and ions storage,103,143–157 etc. Metal chalcogenides‐based hybrid nanostructures are also interesting, like metal chalcogenides coupling with noble metals,55,158–163 oxides,33,93,109,117,124,155,164–193 carbon materials,194–203 etc 204–208.…”

“…Here, we intend to fill the gap along this exploration. For instance, TMD in quantum dot (QD) form deserves more investigation because their pronounced quantum confinement effects (QCE) and edge effects further aid applications in catalysts and sensing [ 29 , 30 ]. Significant enhancement in photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency by QCE is favorable to develop a sensor by optical means [ 31 , 32 ].…”

“…However, whether long‐term use can cause excessive poisoning of phosphate ions, such as loss of metal ions in the body (e.g., calcium and magnesium), still needs long‐term investigation. Recently, Zhou et al reported that BP nanosheets as a highly bioactive antitumor drug due to their selective chemotherapeutic effect. Due to the accelerated energy metabolism and strong intracellular oxidative stress in cancer cells, the degradation rate of BPs in cancer cells was faster than in normal cells, resulting in severe elevation of phosphate anions in cancer cells.…”
