Emergent boundary objects and boundary zones in collaborative design research projects

Abstract: This paper examines how the dynamics between design and research interests shape and influence the development of design concepts in collaborative design projects. We introduce the concepts of boundary zones and emergent boundary objects in order to account for how different project stakeholders align their interests and move towards shared project goals. Though the study is of a specific case, namely the collaboration between interaction design researchers and architects to develop interactive components in a… Show more

“…Emergent boundary objects are often derived from complex wicked problems and begin in design concepts that continuously change and evolve during the design process [42]. Emergent boundary objects are therefore boundary objects that have not yet been stabilized and are still being negotiated according to Dalsgaard, Halskov [42]. In accordance with Ewenstein and Whyte [43], they can also be seen as open boundary objects.…”

“…They negotiate boundaries by serving to establish and destabilize and in the process can push beyond the existing boundaries. Following in this same vein we find boundary negotiating zones (Halpern et al, 2013) and emergent Boundary Zones (Dalsgaard, 2014), As a translational device, the BO performs critical work at organizational and intellectual boundaries.…”

“…They negotiate boundaries by serving to establish and destabilize and in the process can push beyond the existing boundaries. Following in this same vein we find boundary negotiating zones (Halpern, Erickson, Forlano, & Gay, ) and emergent Boundary Zones (Dalsgaard, Halskov, & Basballe, ), As a translational device, the BO performs critical work at organizational and intellectual boundaries. Recognizing this boundary spanning quality positions the BO as a lifeline—allowing communities to embrace plasticity, but appreciate rigidity.…”

“…"Conceptual" workspaces (e.g., where no visual aids were used) were more complex for the stakeholders, and discussions were more limited. In this sense, visual artefacts contained in shared workspaces are "emergent boundary objects" [8], as they are used to focus the discussion with emphasis on its progression and dynamic transformation.…”
