The COVID-19 pandemic has caused teachers and students to abandon their physical classrooms and move into emergency distance education (EDE) settings. Thus, sustaining the quality in education has become a challenge during this transitional period. Within this context, the aim of this study was to explore the impact of EDE on language skills development (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of Turkish pre-service teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL). In this qualitative study, data were gathered from 118 pre-service EFL teachers about the advantages and disadvantages of EDE for their language skills development. Thematic analysis was used as a research design, and nine themes emerged for both advantages and disadvantages. The most important theme for both categories is content and implementation of online courses. This study pinpointed the eminence of this theme, for if it is emphasized enough and handled efficiently, it plays a huge role in developing language skills. The themes and sub-themes generated through thematic analysis showed the advantages and disadvantages of EDE for each skill in detail and also proved that EDE was most advantageous for writing skill and least advantageous for speaking skill. The participants stated that, since writing skill was constantly used for almost all homework, assignments and projects, that skill was nurtured the most. Nevertheless, speaking skill was ignored during online courses, and writing became the new mode of communication by replacing speaking. The outcome of the present study encourages preparedness for EDE against a possible second wave. Thus, the study is hoped to pave the way for anticipating issues and developing solutions for EDE contexts to preserve sustainability in higher education.

Este estudo teve por objetivo identificar as condições, expectativas e capacidades de professores de cursos presenciais para a realização de atividades de ensino (letivas) remotas mediadas por tecnologias digitais, em virtude do distanciamento social associado à pandemia da COVID-19. Desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa exploratória, de abordagem quantitativa, com uma amostra não-probabilística de conveniência de 588 professores brasileiros de instituições públicas e privadas de ensino presencial de diversas áreas do conhecimento. Os participantes foram convidados pelas redes sociais a responder voluntariamente a um questionário on-line, entre os dias 19 e 30 de junho de 2020. Foram realizadas análises estatísticas descritivas de parametrização simples (p.ex., frequência, média, desvio-padrão), bem como análises inferenciais, por exemplo, a análise fatorial exploratória e a regressão linear múltipla. Os resultados destacam que a maioria dos professores investigados apresentou predisposição e interesse em realizar atividades remotas, além de condições técnicas de acesso e uso de internet e de equipamentos digitais e computacionais. Apesar disso, a instituições escolares precisam se atentar os intervenientes associados ao ambiente domiciliar, como as demandas domésticas e familiares e as necessidades individuais dos professores que podem se tornar barreiras para o efetivo desenvolvimento da Educação Remota Emergencial.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic changed the course of delivering quality education to learners. This study analyzed the level of digital competence of school administrators, the readiness of schools, and perceived challenges on the delivery of distance learning. Using a descriptive research design, the researchers used an online survey to gather pertinent data for the study. Thirty-six (36) administrators took part in the online survey using universal sampling from a school division in the province of Bulacan, Philippines. The researchers created an online research instrument and subjected it to validation before the actual administration. After data gathering, the researchers encoded and tabulated the data. This study used the following statistical tools to analyze the data: frequency, percentage, and rank. The study found that the administrators have varied results on the aspect of digital competence based on the statistical analysis. In terms of school readiness on distance learning, the schools were not yet ready to implement a distance learning scheme. For the perceived challenges, internet connection/ connectivity is the primary concern. Other challenges involve preparation, competencies, funding, and devices for distance learning. Based on the result of the study, the researchers provided some essential recommendations for the administrators, teachers, and other stakeholders.
