Emergency Contraception: Pediatricians' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Opinions

Abstract: Despite the safety and efficacy of EC, the low rate of use is of concern. Pediatricians are being confronted with the decision to prescribe EC but do not feel comfortable prescribing it because of inadequate training in its use. Practicing pediatricians are aware of their lack of experience and are interested in improving their knowledge base.

“…This observation is in line with other previous studies 10,13,14 and, in our opinion, several factors might be involved, such as the particular professional's moral views, and organisational aspects. Physicians may feel not at ease in prescribing the drug if they judge this to be immoral, but they may also experience discomfort, because they consider that going to an ED and asking for a prescription of EC pills is an inappropriate use of emergency resources and service.…”

“…Second, it was conducted in a health system where women who go to an ED and ask for a prescription of LNG-EC pills can be seen either by emergency physicians or by gynaecologists, so that we could make a comparison between these two groups of professionals. Third, it examined the level of knowledge of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of LNG-EC pills by ED medical staff, an aspect that other studies on record did not take into consideration 11,12,14,15 .…”

“…Few studies have examined physicians' attitudes toward ECP provision by physician characteristics. Golden et al 35 found that although younger pediatricians were more likely than older pediatricians to have been confronted with the decision to prescribe ECP, there were no differences in their comfort level about prescribing ECP. Our study, however, indicates that older physicians were significantly more likely than younger physicians to support OTC provision of ECP or offer advance prescriptions to patients.…”

“…7,18,28,[35][36][37][38] Few concerns about the safety and efficacy of taking ECP were raised by physicians. Rather, some respondents worried that use of ECP may discourage regular contraceptive use (17%) or encourage promiscuity (6%).…”

“…1,26,29,30 In addition, negative attitudes about providing adolescent sexual health care have been previously reported among pediatric HCPs, especially surrounding emergency contraception. 1,26,31 Many studies describe the challenges involved in changing HCP attitudes and behaviors; implementing an innovative intervention such as a sexual health educator provides an alternative strategy to meet adolescent sexual health needs. 27,[32][33][34] Interestingly, despite some concerns and negative attitudes expressed by participants in our study, most stated that they would support this ED intervention to provide sexual health care.…”
