Embodiment, Sexual Difference, and the Nomadic Subject

Abstract: This article deals with sexual difference as a philosophy of subjectivity which, however inspired by poststructuralism, was further developed by feminists. The main features of this philosophy are outlined both in terms of its style and of its vision of woman as subject. The notion of ‘difference’ is analyzed in details, as the central concept that sustains the feminist nomadic philosophy of a subject that is both complex and situated, politically empowered and epistemologically legitimate.

“…Identities and subjectivities are interconnected but they are not identical. Subjectivity encompasses the historical, social and political possibilities of agency, while identity is linked to consciousness, desire and politics concerning what is imagined to be personal to the individual (Braidotti, 1993). In this way, identity emerges when the subjective, that is, the historical, political and social possibilities of existence, connects to the personal.…”

“…Some posted 'Seriously average' selfies 'in reading glasses and without makeup' (Harper Simmons 3 April 2015), while others were seductively postured in bed 'getting ready for work' (Avery 3 April 2015), lying in a bubble bath (MadamMinxx 28 March 2015), or in dominatrix-inspired lingerie with black leather bra and red lipstick (Mistress Lily, 29 March 2015). For materialist feminists, female subjectivity originates in the corporeal and, far from being fixed and immutable, articulates multiplicity, complexity and, often, contradictory realms of experience (Braidotti, 1989(Braidotti, , 1993Grosz, 1994). That diversity was reflected in the range of contributors to the network whose social markers such as age, ethnicity, gender and sexuality appeared no barrier to entry.…”
