Embodied Knowledge

Abstract: In theories of grounded cognition, mental representations (concepts) share processing mechanisms with systems for perception and action. In this view, mental representations are simulations of embodied experiences. This view is supported by empirical data showing that concepts, linguistic processing, and emotion processing interact with perception and action. Key issues for further research are the question how abstract concepts are grounded in sensory‐motor processing, how language and concepts are related, a… Show more

“…Thus, while detecting the color of a traffic light in a cross-road mainly involves the visual modality, perceiving the melody of a violin during a classic concert mainly involves the auditory modality. According to grounded theories of knowledge ( Barsalou, 2008 ; for a recent discussion see Borghi and Caruana, 2015 ; Pecher and Zeelenberg, 2015 ), sensory information is also active when we process the concepts TRAFFIC LIGHT and VIOLIN 1 . In other words, processing concepts would imply a re-enactment of previously recorded and integrated perceptual information concerning the objects or entities they refer to.…”

“…In the past decades, within the Embodiment approach (Barsalou, 1999;2007;2010;Glenberg & Robertson, 2000;Meteyard et al, 2012;Pecher & Zeelenberg, 2015), researchers were looking for a measure that captures perceptual information more accurately than concreteness. The critical point of the Embodiment theories is that conceptual processing relies on the sensory-motor system (Meteyard et al, 2012;Pecher et al, 2003).…”

“…The critical point of the Embodiment theories is that conceptual processing relies on the sensory-motor system (Meteyard et al, 2012;Pecher et al, 2003). For example, according to Perceptual symbol systems theory (PSST; Barsalou, 1999;Barsalou, 2007;Pecher & Zeelenberg, 2015), the mental representations of concepts are grounded in the sensory-motor experience with their external referents. Accordingly, concept representations are considered simulations of the previous perceptual experience.…”
