The UK construction industry faces the daunting task of replacing and extending a significant proportion of UK infrastructure, meeting a growing housing shortage and retrofitting millions of homes whilst achieving greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions compatible with the UK's legally binding target of an 80% reduction by 2050. This paper presents a detailed time series of embodied GHG emissions from the construction sector for 1997-2011. This data is used to demonstrate that strategies which focus solely on improving operational performance of buildings and the production efficiencies of domestic material producers will be insufficient to meet sector emission reduction targets.Reductions in the order of 80% will require a substantial decline in the use of materials with carbon-intensive supply chains. A variety of alternative materials, technologies and practices are available and the common barriers to their use are presented based upon an extensive literature survey. Key gaps in qualitative research, data and modelling approaches are also identified. Subsequent discussion highlights the lack of client and regulatory drivers for uptake of alternatives and the ineffective allocation of responsibility for emissions reduction within the industry. Only by addressing and overcoming all these challenges in combination can the construction sector achieve drastic emissions reduction.

ResumoA necessidade da redução do consumo de energia elétrica e de emissão de GHGs (GreenHouse Gases) já é consensual. Sabe-se que edifícios consomem quantidades significativas de energia, além de emitirem grandes quantidades de GHGs. Devido a essa enorme influência sobre a sociedade, é fundamental para arquitetura e construção estar consciente do seu impacto, e desenvolver ferramentas eficazes que são capazes de medir a origem e a possível redução destes impactos, com o uso da avaliação do ciclo de vida de edificações (ACV) aliada ao Building Information Modeling (BIM). Este artigo fornece uma contribuição teórica no campo de integração de BIM e avaliação de ciclo de vida (ACV). A revisão de literatura evidencia que as publicações no tema BIM/ACV concentram-se no desenvolvimento e no melhoramento das ferramentas computacionais para auxiliar a ACV nas fases de projeto e de construção de edificações. São poucas as contribuições que tratam do processo de trabalho. Para contribuir no preenchimento desta lacuna de conhecimento, este artigo analisa o impacto potencial trazido pela adoção de BIM na ACV da perspectiva de processo, tecnologia associada e informação trocada. O método compõe-se de uma revisão sistemática de literatura (RSL), seguida da análise de fluxos de trabalho de avaliação tradicional de energia e emissão de GHGs incorporadas no ciclo de vida comparativamente ao fluxo de trabalho mediado por BIM. A RSL identificou lacunas e tendências de pesquisa, e embasou a elaboração de fluxos de trabalho analisados. Da análise comparativa depreendeu-se que a adoção de BIM no fluxo de trabalho de avaliação de energia incorporada e emissão de GHGs no ciclo de vida de edificações, tem impacto variado no processo de projeto e alto impacto na coleta de dados. A principal vantagem do uso de BIM na ACV é a sua capacidade de otimizar o processo, auxiliar a tomada de decisão durante toda a evolução do projeto e instigar a convergência para uma solução otimizada.Palavras-chave: BIM. In recent years, there has been a worldwide effort to reduce carbon emissions from buildings. Operational energy (OE) reduction has been the main focus of the Industry as it accounts for a greater proportion of carbon emissions throughout the building life and is easier than embodied energy (EE) to predict. However, as OE is reduced, embodied energy and carbon emissions become more significant. Further to this, early-stage design decisions are crucial as they determine a significant portion of a building's life-cycle impacts and cannot easily be amended later in the life of a building. Currently though, there is a lack of legislation and guidance relating to embodied carbon (EC) in buildings. This, together with the UK construction industry fragmentation, creates a significant barrier to dealing with embodied carbon at the design stage. The UK Government has mandated the implementation of collaborative 3D BIM for all public-sector projects. This step aims to tackle cost and carbon emission reduction targets by encouraging the construction Industry to operate more collaboratively thereby enabling greater efficiency. Since BIM empowers communications and stores information into one single digital model it has the potential to enable whole-building EC calculations. This can facilitate EC calculation to be included in early-design stage. This paper looks at literature that relates to BIM and EC's role in early-stage design and draws conclusions on how BIM can enable EC calculation inclusion to early-stage design. It establishes a correlation between the matrix of information required for BIM and the information required for whole-building EC calculations. This research aims to reveal the actors and processes involved in providing this information and suggest the project stages that EC calculations should take place in early-stage design. The future benefit is to inform practice and policy to enable EC reduction through BIM in order to meet overall carbon targets.
