EM Side-Channel Countermeasure for Switched-Capacitor DC–DC Converters Based on Amplitude Modulation

Abstract: The security of IoT devices is becoming a major concern in industry. Noninvasive side-channel attacks pose a serious threat as they are capable of extracting secret information from distance while using low-cost equipment. In this article, we propose an efficient countermeasure technique against the electromagnetic (EM) side-channel attacks. The technique is applied to switched-capacitor (SC) dc-dc converters and is based on amplitude modulation of the load signal by the converter capacitance that acts as a ca… Show more

“…For mitigating electro-magnetic side-channel leakages, techniques such as on-chip clock network adjustments [62], using metal layers aided with higher-order multipoles in integrated Circuit (IC) designs [63], usage of Randomized Switching Successive Approximation Register (RS-SAR) with Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) [64] and amplitude modulation of the load signal by converter capacitance acting as a carrier in Switched-capacitor (SC) dc-dc converters [65] are used.…”

“…As a result, this section provides a brief overview of EM-SCA countermeasures in the literature. Due to the serious implications of EM-SCA in retrieving data from computing systems, numerous software and hardware countermeasures have been developed [56,159,210,211,212,213]. Nassar et al [214] proposed a masking scheme for AES called Rotating S-boxes Masking (RSM).…”

“…The LDOs provide varying impedance between the internal supply voltage and the external supply voltage which helps in suppressing datadependent current transients. Others have explored the amplitude modulation of the load signal at the DC-DC converter capacitance to minimize information leakage [25].…”
