The nanoparticles are a miracle invention of the century that has opened novel avenues of applications in various fields. The safety aspect of exposure to nanoparticles for humans, plants, animals, soil micro-flora, and ecosystem at large has been questioned. The safety concern can be addressed by laboratory studies to assess the actual risk and recommend exposure limits and related regulation. There is also a suggestion for considering the nanoparticle form of conventional compounds as a new chemical and subject it to safety assessment in line with the chemical regulatory agencies. In the light of the current scenario of popularity and safety concerns regarding nanoparticles, the use of ancient metal based forms like, Bhasma is revisited in the present article. The current approach of green synthesis of nanoparticles is compared with the Ayurveda Rasayana Shastra guidelines of Bhasma preparation and modern preparation of engineered nanoparticles. Since the benefits of nanotechnology are undeniable, and safety concerns are also not ungrounded, there is a pressing need to revisit the ways nanoparticles are manufactured, and to carry out safety assessment by the techniques specially adapted for this novel compound.

Currently, modern lifestyle diseases (LSD) such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular and thyroid disease are commonly seen among people of different age groups. One of the root causes of this LSD is the type of food that we are eating. Staple crops like rice, sugarcane, vegetables and wheat are grown with the application of agrochemicals (e.g., glyphosate), traces of which are found in our food; after that, it gets ultra‐processed in factories; e.g., chips and snacks are fried using saturated fats (trans fat); sugar and wheat (derivatives bread, buns, cookies) are processed using toxic chemicals (bleaching agents). As a result, the nutritional value of food is compromised due to low dietary fiber content and synthetic additives – e.g., sucralose (artificial sweetener) – which promotes inflammation and weakens our immune system, causing our body to become sensitive to microbial infection and many other LSDs. To strengthen the immune system, people start taking synthetically prepared supplements and drugs for a prolonged time, which further deteriorates the body organs and their normal function; e.g., prolonged medication for hypothyroidism poses a risk of heart attack and joint pain. Nanotechnology solves the above problems in the food, nutraceuticals and agriculture sectors. Nanotechnology‐based naturally processed products such as nano‐nutraceuticals, nanofood, nanofertilizers and nanopesticides will benefit our health. They possess desirable properties such as high bioavailability, targeted delivery, least processing and sustained release. With the help of nanotechnology, we can get nutritional and agrochemical‐free food. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

There are several standardization techniques for assuring the quality of Ayurvedic medicines. Bhasmas are nanoparticle medicines, which are used in Ayurveda and quality assurance of these medicines plays an important role in the action of these remedies. As a physiochemical test for this quality assurance, Mandura bhasma was chosen and various physiochemical analysis was done, it was compared with synthesized iron oxide, to get the same physical and chemical parameters. FTIR studies were made for confirming the presence of iron oxide in the sample. XRD was taken on both the samples and the particle size was determined. Morphology of the samples were studied using SEM. Composition was determined using EDAX. The study reveals that the composition of the bhasmas are important in each formulation and it can be studied using EDAX. The impurities can be exactly determined by EDAX, which may be deliberately introduced in the drug for the effectiveness of the Ayurvedic drug. From this study, it is seen that XRD analysis is less important physiochemical analysis than the other methods mentioned in this paper. Further, the morphology from SEM shows that the bhasmas are a combination of various sized nanoparticles which has different spheres of action due to its size, which shows that the same bhasma can be used for different ailments due to its size effect.
