Hypertension is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease and it is a major problem in both developed and developing countries. Obesity is one of the main risk factors of hypertension. Hypertension and obesity are health problems which its prevalence is continues to increase in Indonesia. The anthropometric index that can be used to determine nutritional status are the body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference measurement. This study was an observational analytic with cross sectional method. The sample of this study was 275 respondent who were selected using the consecutive sampling method in Karang Asam public health center Samarinda. Data of this study were obtained from direct measurement of height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure of respondent and data were analyzed by using chi square test. The result of statistical test showed that there was relationship between body mass index (p = 0,000 ; OR= 5,234 ; 95% CI= 3,090-8,865) and waist circumference (p = 0,000; OR=5,489 ; 95% CI= 3,233 – 9,318) with blood pressure. There was a significant relationship between body mass index and waist circumference with blood pressure at Karang Asam Public Health Center Samarinda.

The increased prevalence of obesity is due to a decreased level of physical activity and increased intake of fast food. Furthermore, obesity among children and adolescent is a risk factor for life-threatening conditions including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), Cardio-metabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer and reproductive disorders. The aim of this study is to describe the determinants of obesity. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 377 adolescents aged 13 to 20 years from 16 secondary schools in Thulamela Municipality, Vhembe District Limpopo Province, South Africa. Information about socio-demographic characteristics, household income, disease family history, and level of education of parents was obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements such as weight, height and waist circumference were taken by trained field workers and body mass index (BMI), and the waist-hip ratio were determined. Biochemical measurements and clinical assessment were done by a professional nurse following standard procedures. The prevalence of obesity is 22.2% in males and 32.6% in females by abdominal obesity by (waist circumference), whilst 11.1% (males) and 28.3% (females) by waist to hip ratio (WHR). Gender (β=0.32, p=0.018, 95%CI); age (β=1.28, p=0.015, 95%CI); source of income (β=3.25, p=0.008, 95%CI) and systolic blood pressure (β=1.04, p=0.01, 95%CI) were associated with obesity. Overweight and obesity were more prevalent in females than in males in Thulamela municipality. There is a need to bring up children and adolescents in a health-promoting environment in an effort to reverse and stop the increasing trend of overweight and obesity.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of hypertension in adults and analyze its association with socioeconomic, demographic, and lifestyle risk factors. METHODS Home-based cross-sectional epidemiological study conducted with adults of both sexes living in the cities of Teresina and Picos (PI). The prevalence of hypertension was estimated by self-reported diagnosis. The associations between hypertension and the following variables were tested: age, gender, skin color, education, family income, marital status, alcohol and cigarette consumption, physical activity, and nutritional status. RESULTS A total of 1,057 adult individuals with a mean age of 38.6 ± 11.5 years participated in the study, of which 62.3% were female. The prevalence of hypertension in the population was 16.4%. In the crude analysis, a significant association was observed between the prevalence of hypertension and factors such as older age, lower education, single marital status, brown skin color, smoking, and overweight (p < 0.05). However, after adjustments, only the associations with older age, brown skin color, sedentary lifestyle and overweight remained significant. CONCLUSION Older age, brown skin color, sedentary lifestyle, and the presence of overweight or obesity were significantly associated with hypertension. Among the modifiable risk factors, a sedentary lifestyle and overweight stand out as important for the genesis of hypertension, subject to intervention measures.
