Ellagitannins and simple phenolics from the halophytic plant Tamarix nilotica

Abstract: Three new [nilotinins M8-M10 (1-3)] and two known [tamarixinin A (4) and gemin D (5)] ellagitannins and seven simple phenolics [gallic acid (6), methyl gallate (7), 3,4-di-O-methylgallic acid (8), ellagic acid (9), 3-O-methylellagic acid (10), methyl ferulate 3-O-sulphate (11), and 7,4′-di-O-methylkaempferol (12)] were isolated from the halophytic plant Tamarix nilotica (Ehrenb.) Bunge (Tamaricaceae). Their structures were determined based on intensive spectroscopic studies and comparisons with reported data. … Show more

“…Miltefosine was used as a positive control. All data have been reported as the mean ± SE of triplicate results (Asaumi et al 2018;Orabi et al 2020). The viability of axenic amastigote was evaluated by the intensity of MTT deposition by Image J software (Matteucci et al 2019).…”

“…TA is an ellagitannin dimer (Figure 1) with a wide range of reducing functionalities (OH, CO, and C-O-C), making it an excellent agent for reducing copper ions to metal CuNPs. TA was also found to be a major ellagitannin in various Tamaricaceae plants including T. nilotica, T. tetrandra, and Reaumuria hirtella, which are common invasive plants in many deserts and Oases of the Middle East [18][19][20][21].…”

“…In the light of these rates of morbidity and mortality, the impulse to find and develop alternative or synergistic anti-cancer agents became priority among researchers. On the other hand, cutaneous leishmaniasis, a disease caused by the protozoan parasite L. major, is the most common form of leishmaniasis affecting humans especially among countries of the Middle East and Asia [9,10]. The protozoan L. major transmits from an infected person to a new one by a female sand-fly which belongs to the genus Phlebotomus [11].…”
