Elimination of light leakage over the entire viewing cone in a homogeneously-aligned liquid crystal cell

Abstract: We propose an optical compensation scheme that uses uniaxial films for perfect elimination of light leakage over the entire viewing cone in a homogeneously-aligned liquid crystal cell. Uniaxial films with different dispersion characteristics are used so that they can compensate one another to achieve achromatic optical compensation. Owing to the rotational symmetry of the polarization change on the S(2)-S(3) plane of the Poincaré sphere, we can eliminate the light leakage at all azimuth angles. The contrast ra… Show more

“…We proposed the +A/+A/+C/+A/+A configuration using two sets of orthogonal positive A plates and a positive C plate, as shown in Fig. 9(a), for perfect elimination of the dark-state light leakage over the entire viewing cone in an in-planeswitching LC cell [23]. The use of two orthogonal positive A plates allows for symmetrical rotation of the polarization state on the Poincaré sphere.…”

“…Moreover, the turn-off time is not dependent on the pretilt angle. Therefore, to enhance viewing angle characteristics, viewing angle compensation methods developed for a conventional FFS cell with α ≠ 0 can be directly applied to a zero-rubbing-angle cell with little modification1718192021.…”

“…A VA negative LC layer is sandwiched between the top substrate and bottom dielectric layer; the cell gap d is uniform throughout all the pixel area. In order to achieve a relatively better dark state in the R region, on each side of the TR‐LCD panel, a broadband half‐wave plate and quarter‐wave plate together with a linear polarizer and analyzer works as a circular polarizer . Additionally, a negative C‐plate is adopted to partially compensate the phase retardation from the VA negative LC layer .…”
