Objective Sex disparity is a major societal issue. The aim of this paper was to describe changes in the representation of women among speakers of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) annual meeting over 10 years, between 2009 and 2019 and to compare them to changes in the proportion of women among American psychiatrists. Methods Data were collected from the programs of the APA annual meetings of 2009 and 2019, and from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses were performed. Results There were 1,138 distinct speakers at the 2009 conference and 1,784 at the 2019 conference. The number of distinct female speakers increased from 413 (36.3%) to 813 (45.6%). The proportion of female speakers at the meetings was almost equivalent to the proportion of women in the American psychiatrists’ workforce. The number of female chairs increased from 158 (39.6%) to 322 (46.4%). There were 38 female speakers in child and adolescent psychiatry in 2009 (51.4% of 74 speakers) and 74 in 2019 (51.0% of 155 speakers). Conclusions The representation of women at the APA annual meetings increased between 2009 and 2019. At the same time, the growth in the percentage of women in the American psychiatrists’ workforce was slower. The APA appears to promote female representation during its annual meetings.

El artículo tiene por objetivo comprender el fenómeno del techo de cristal (TC) desde las percepciones y experiencias de las profesoras-investigadoras universitarias, respecto del acceso de las mujeres a los cargos directivos de la universidad. Considerando un enfoque de investigación cualitativo y el método de estudio de caso único, se analiza dicha problemática en una universidad en México a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a 20 mujeres con experiencia en puestos directivos universitarios. Las entrevistadas reconocen algunas barreras que configuran el techo de cristal en la universidad estudiada, pero valoran positivamente el histórico impacto de la única mujer que ha ocupado el cargo de rectora en la institución, como una líder que se convierte en un factor relevante para avanzar en la igualdad de género en la organización. Se identifican algunas propuestas de estructuras, políticas y acciones institucionales que pueden contribuir a la eliminación más efectiva de las barreras u obstáculos que configuran el techo de cristal en las instituciones universitarias.

As women started to take an active role in business life, the problems faced by women in organizational life attracted the attention of researchers. The concept of glass ceiling effect, which is popular in recent years, has been studied in many business areas. This study was held with the aim of reviewing studies published between January 2000 and May 2019 in Turkey about glass ceiling effect perception of women working in academia and systematically reviewing data obtained from the studies. A total 168 publications were reached, and 3 of them were evaluated as part of the study according to inclusion criteria. Results were obtained by focusing on variables affecting ceiling glass effect perception, assessment tools used in studies and solutions suggested to break glass ceilings in academia. In general, it was found that very less known according glass ceiling effect perception in academia. Main findings show that main factors that are related to glass ceiling effect perception are opinion of women duties in family and business life, organisational policies, power distance and organisational factors that impede the rise of women in hierarchy. Systematic review of related studies has put forth scientific evidence on the importance of the problem. Since the academy is an area where women work intensively, the problem of ceiling glass effect perception of women working in academia should be studied in-depth
